This has been discussed to death on discussion boards everywhere. We all know that people can make money with webcomics, mostly from merchandise, but is anyone here actually making $?

I'm just starting mine, I don't expect to make anything, but I am hoping that I do, even if it's just a few bucks. The main reason, obviously not to support my family, but more to prove to my 'old lady' that money can be made, so let me draw dammit! ;)

I made money doing a web comic about three years ago. At $20 a strip published everyday it was the best cartoonist gig I ever had:

Nothing but a few pennies a day, but those pennies are adding up. Like you, I'm not looking for this to be some major source of income, but if it can cover the hosting and domain name fees, I'll consider it a bigger success than I thought it ever could be.

Really, from what I've seen and heard, Project Wonderful is really one of the best ways to go, as you have control over the ad space, sizes, and content. They've been good to me. Plus you can make up some ads, and even though it takes a bit of time, you can do a decent amount of free advertising that will get you a small amount of traffic. It might not be worth the time, but it's something.

At this point, I'm just going to be rambling, so I hope this helped. Or something

Yeah, i've gone for the Project wonderful route, as well as Google Adsense. SO far I've made about $40 in 2 months.
Currently working on a book on www.Lulu.com to sell on my site's store.

hey, thanks for the info. I know its going to take a long time before I can even make pennies. Project wonderful wont even consider me until I have a whole whack of comics online. But I'm somewhat moderately kinda patient.

Here's my biggest wonder. If I am so broke after spending my pennies on keeping my family alive that I can't afford a domain name let alone a hosting package, where should I go?

I'm on webcomicnation right now, and thinking of blogger. But what else is there?

Hard to say... That's what I've been doing. I am on both, and it is my blogger account that is currently making the pennies.

I'm currently hosting through 1and1.com, which has hosting/domains for as little as $4.00 a month. They seem to be pretty good, though I had to find a few tutorials in order to upload WordPress--my site is still in shambles.

One free host that seems to be alright is used--though he has the upgraded/paid account now--by Elsie Hooper. The site he uses is freewebs.com. Not super customizable for the free things, but it would function. Then it is only $10 or less for a year of a domain name.

I'm pretty new to this stuff myself, but maybe this will help give you a few ideas, until someone more knowledgeable can help out.

There are some pretty cheap hosting options out there that are good. Right now I use 1 and 1 for my hosting. I get 120 gigs of space and 1200 gigs of bandwidth, with 2 domain names included, for about $30 every 6 months and there is 1 package a little cheaper. I figure $5 a month ain't hard to save, though you do have to pay for the whole 6 months up front. Still cheap compared to a lot of places and I did a lot of looking around.

For those needing tips on Advertising on your Webcomic to pull in some revenue, I just posted a blog analyzing Project Wonderful and AdBrite (two well known ad networks). I've made money with both depending on my site's traffic size and shared some tips of the difference between to the two...

Yes, my comic 1977 is just now starting to generate revenue. About $500/month at the moment, and I'm thrilled as I started it back in June of 2007. My Project Wonderful ads pay for the hosting for sure. I'm now taking subscribers and that's going not too bad. But I'll be doing two conventions this year and I expect a bigger spike after those two shows.

I'll be selling a print version of the comic and some t-shirts (plus some commissions I guess). But each show will cost me about $1000 in table/print material fees. Hard to come up with that!

It does take patience and I'm not full of that. So stick with it if you can!

I've never made a dime. But I'm okay with that. I think I have like 15 readers, so making money isn't even on my radar right now.

A whole 15?! I'm so envious of you.

Ok.. that's only a partial joke, I've got a few, but only 2 I know are regulars...

Also only pennies a day on Project Wonderful. I say good luck to those expecting to make money on anything normally considered 'free entertainment'. Thanks economy.
