Daisy came from a doodle I did in one of my philosophy classes a few years ago. We were talking about death, and I drew a little zombie girl planting daisies, then added some daisies growing out of her as well. I kept drawing her, and eventually doodled up the joke that eventually became the first Daisy is Dead strip (started because my boyfriend was prodding me to do a webcomic, and Daisy was the only character I could think up material for.)
Daisy is the first comic I've made that's had it's own website, but the first comic I ever posted on the web (which I guess makes it a webcomic) was a short-run strip called Sporkitude (originally called "Dedele Comics.) It started in 2002 and starred a fox named Adele, a raccoon named Dede, with many, many more characters added as it progressed (many of whom belonged to friends of mine.) It ended in 2004 after only 18 strips, the first of which is here: http://cozmictwinkie.deviantart.com/art/Watch-it-Dede-657451 and the rest of which can be found in the bowels of my dA gallery. I'd eventually like to start it up again, as I really do like the characters, but so far I'm not sure what to do with them. =P
Hi, Lindsay. Great strip. I love to hear how other cartoonists come up with their characters. I was struck by your comment about characters with material. I have numerous characters, but the only one I can consitantly write for is a 50s type monster called The Unthinkable Hybrid. My sister liked another character I had and couldn't understand why I didn't elect to use him. I didn't because I simply couldn't write for him. Glad to know I'm not alone in this. Daisy is a cute and sexy little cartoon and I enjoy reading it. It has a perky quality I admire. Keep it up!
